STUDENT SERVICES  |  Multicultural Programs

The Office of Recruitment and Retention in the College of Health and Human Services is committed to the recruitment, retention and successful graduation of students from underrepresented populations. This office is also designed to create an environment that is conducive to the academic and social success of multicultural students, faculty and staff.

The Office provides the following programs and services:

Retention Program: This program is designed for all students in CHHS that are academically suspended. As part of the program, the student is allowed to enroll the quarter following suspension.

HCOP Program: The HCOP program offers a pipeline of opportunities that provides structure and support for middle school, high school and undergraduate students to make informed decisions about course and major selections, financial aid, cultural competency  and preparation for successful admission to medical school or other health profession programs.

Tutorial Assistance: Free tutorial assistance is provided to first-year multicultural students within CHHS.

Student Development: The Office participates in and sponsors programs throughout the University. In addition, select students are invited to attend national conferences that are reflective of the majors within the College.

Mentoring Program: Visonz of Color is a mentoring program that is designed to assist students' transition throughout college.

Academic Advising: The Assistant to the Dean for Recruitment and Retention serves as academic adviser to 30 undecided students within the CHHS. In addition, the Office participates in pre-college and commencement activities.


Scholarships: The following scholarships in the College of Health and Human Services are awarded exclusively to multicultural students, as specified.

The Drs. Michael and Carol Harter Endowed Scholarship for Minorities is awarded to minority students enrolled in the College of Health and Human Services, based on demonstrated academic achievement with financial need considered.

The Hilda Richards Scholarship is awarded to an African-American student enrolled in the College of Health and Human Services, based on demonstrated academic achievement with consideration to financial need.
