Mission
The School of Human and Consumer Sciences promotes the quest for improvement of quality of life and the human condition through the integration of theory, research, and practice. The School endeavors to emphasize the relationships of the needs of individuals and families across life's span to the society and environment. The School is committed to seeking innovative solutions to contemporary challenges and assumes responsibility for the dissemination of knowledge to the public to improve the quality of choice and consumption of goods and services.

Common to all specialized areas is the preparation of students for positions in their chosen areas of specialization. Shared by all specializations are courses that facilitate physical, intellectual, psychological, and social life span development. Each course of study seeks to improve the quality of human development by addressing the needs of individuals and families throughout the life span, including the impact of family roles and dynamics, and the formation and maintenance of human relationships.

Cooperation and Collaboration: Specialized areas work cooperatively within the School, with regional campuses, and with organizations and agencies in the community to provide realistic and beneficial experiential learning opportunities for students along with service to the community.

Responsibility, Accountability, and Civility: The continued success of the profession demands an appropriate role of ethics in professional preparation. Civility in communication is valued as a contributor to strong interpersonal relationships to a positive learning environment.

Globalization: the curriculum reflects international influences in specialized areas and includes opportunities for student travel to further emphasize the importance of cultural awareness.

Leadership and Innovation: Campus and community leadership is valued in both faculty and students. Innovative teaching, including integration of technology and alternative deliver of course material to maximize collaborative opportunities, is valued.

Aesthetics: The role that the environment plays in the well-being of individuals and families is recognized. Appreciation of cultural and historic influences contributes positively to the understanding of aesthetic messages.

Lifelong Learning: The process of learning continues throughout the life span. We seek to provide appropriate opportunities for students, faculty and staff to engage in lifelong learning.
