About the Program
ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN NURSING (ADN)
The ADN program has three major categories of required courses: (1) prerequisites, (2) general education requirements, and (3) nursing courses. Prerequisite courses include chemistry, biology and algebra at the high school or college level with a grade of “C” or better. Students are required to take the ACT compass placement test in the areas of Math, English and Reading. Students must test at the college level or take the required courses. Courses taken at other colleges will be evaluated for transfer credit. If the content is equivalent to the relevant Ohio University course and the earned grade is at least a “C” it may be transferred. Decisions about transfer credit will be made on a case-by-case basis. Students must have a minimum college GPA of 2.75 or better. All transfer GPA’s will be combined for review by the selection committee.
Admission to the ADN program is competitive. Scores on the required standardized test, grades in prerequisite courses, grade point average (GPA), and the individual’s statement of goals are used in making admission decisions. Admission to Ohio University does not guarantee admission to the ADN Program.
Admission
Admission to the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program is selective. Admission to Ohio University does not guarantee admission to the nursing program. You must apply directly to the campus you want to attend.
The same application requirements apply to each campus, but each campus follows a separate admission process. Admission to the nursing program on one campus does not guarantee admission to nursing at either of the other two campuses.
The associate degree nursing program on the Zanesville campus admits students three times per year (fall, winter, spring). The Chillicothe campus admits students twice each year (fall and spring) (Winter at Berger) . The Southern (Ironton) campus accepts admissions to the nursing program only for fall quarter. To be considered for first round selection, applicants must complete applications requirements by the following deadline dates:
Fall Quarter - April 1
Winter Quarter - (Zanesville, Chillicothe/Berger) September 1
Spring Quarter - (Zanesville & Chillicothe) December 1
Students who meet the selection criteria are considered for admission until the maximum number is admitted.
Admission
Application to the ADN Program must begin with admission to Ohio University. Admission to Ohio University requires the applicant to:
1. Complete the application form and pay the nonrefundable application fee ($20). It is possible to apply online or with a hard copy application. Make sure that you send the application form to the campus you want to attend.
2. Submit an official high school transcript or a copy of official GED scores.
3. Submit official transcripts for all previous college courses.
4. Submit official scores of the ACT College Entrance Examination if you are applying to Ohio University directly after graduation high school. Those who have been out of high school for more than a full calendar year before applying to Ohio University are exempt from taking the ACT or SAT.
Review by Selection Committee.
Files are reviewed by the Selection Committee on each campus. The selection review is anonymous. There are no names attached to the file materials during the review process. The following factors strengthen an individual’s application file:
1. Completion of non-nursing courses – the more courses completed the stronger the file.
2. Grades in non-nursing courses – each non-nursing course must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. Grades above a “C” in non-nursing courses will strengthen the file.
3. A well-written Statement of Education and Career Goals will strengthen the application file.
Applicants are notified by mail of the decision by the Selection Committee. The list for each admitted class is maintained until the quarter begins. If an applicant is not admitted for a specific quarter and returns the postal card indicating s/he wants to be considered again, the file will become part of the group of files considered during the next admissions review. Applicants can add material to the file, e.g. updated transcripts showing additional courses completed, prior to the next review cycle.

Advanced Placement for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)
LPNs must meet the same admission requirements as all other applicants. Graduates of approved schools of practical nursing who have successfully passed the NCLEX-PN exam may be granted advanced placement in the associate degree nursing program.
For more information about LPN advanced placement, contact the specific campus where you plan to attend the ADN program.
