Mission
The goal of the muscle mechanics lab is to investigate the relationship between muscle architecture and muscle function. We have been using ultrasound imaging to determine the change in length of the muscle fascicle, muscle-tendon complex, and tendon during several functional activities. The muscle groups that we have been studying have been the biceps femoris, tibialis anterior and the vastus lateralis.
We have focused our attention recently on the interaction between the muscle and tendon during movements in healthy individuals with the goal of including the healthy elderly and those with neurological and orthopedic dysfunction in the near future. Through the understanding of this interaction between muscle and tendon in function we hope to be able to develop more appropriate exercise rehabilitation programs.
