VISION
To be a national leader in the preparation of professionals and scholars through distinctive educational experiences in athletic training education, coaching education, exercise physiology, physical education, recreation studies, and sport(s) management /administration.

MISSION
The School of Recreation and Sport Sciences provides educational opportunities in Athletic Training Education, Coaching Education, Exercise Physiology, Physical Education, Recreation Studies, and Sport(s) Management/Administration. In a learning environment that promotes academic excellence and professional development, the faculty and staff are committed to the creation, enhancement and dissemination of knowledge through each of its unique, distinctive, and focused programs. Diverse learning experiences and community outreach activities motivate students to excel and become leaders in recreation and sports sciences.

GOALS AND STRATEGIES
Provide students with diverse learning opportunities which promote personal and professional growth

  1. Provide professional growth opportunities with area practitioners
  2. Maintain experiential sites and seek to develop new sites
  3. Provide students with discipline-focused knowledge through research and other scholarly activities
  4. Initiate a first-year residential learning community

Maintain leading-edge curricula that prepare students for careers in recreation and sport sciences

  1. Maintain appropriate accreditation and endorsement standards including a formal review every 3-5 years
  2. Promote pedagogical training and content development for the faculty

Engage in high quality graduate education that provides students with professional and scholarly development opportunities in research, clinical skills, and teaching, ultimately fostering scholarly practitioners for the future

  1. Review and refine curriculum to maintain high quality programs and accreditation standards
  2. Provide opportunities and financial support for attendance of professional meetings and organization service
  3. Develop a resource plan (i.e., a work load policy) to maintain and enhance research and clinical opportunities
  4. Develop new and improve existing partnerships among disciplines, agencies, and institutions

Promote inclusiveness through recruitment practices and retention efforts that foster diverse faculty, staff and students

  1. Cooperate with university recruitment programs (e.g., the Urban Scholars Program) and other academic units (e.g., College of Business) to recruit diverse students from unrepresented populations
  2. Create and distribute program materials to urban high schools to promote our programs in urban areas
  3. Initiate a development program for recruiting and training faculty members from underrepresented populations

Foster an environment in which faculty, staff, students, and alumni are encouraged and empowered to actively seek solutions to community and regional problems related to health and wellness

  1. Build and sustain partnerships across disciplines to enhance scholarly endeavors pursued by the faculty
  2. Extend the boundaries of the School through partnerships among disciplines, agencies and institutions

Maintain state of the art technology and develop laboratory facilities to promote undergraduate and graduate education, and research

  1. Develop and implement a long-term budget to support infrastructure enhancement and refurbishment
  2. Develop alumni funding initiatives (including endowments) to support infrastructure enhancement and refurbishment
  3. Seek other external sources of funding to acquire new equipment and support equipment replacement and refurbishment

Encourage recreation and sport sciences faculty, staff, students, and alumni to communicate noteworthy accomplishments

  1. Develop a systematic, professional marketing communication program that utilizes available resources to present and promote accomplishments
  2. Revise and update the school web site annually
  3. Showcase accomplishments of students and alumni and include mention of Ohio University in all media releases
  4. Publicize faculty and staff accomplishments in scholarly and trade media
