2008 Ohio University Alumni Association Awards
Among the five people who were selected by the Ohio University Alumni Association (OUAA) as the recipients of Medal of Merit, two are alumni of the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences.
Jeremy N. Foley '76
Medal of Merit
Mr. Foley is director of athletics for the University of Florida. He began his career in Gainesville in 1976 with an internship in the Gators Ticket Office and was promoted to numerous other positions in athletics before becoming director in 1992. He is the only director of athletics in NCAA Division I history to have supervised a program that won national titles in football and men's basketball. Ohio University's Sports Administration and Facility Management Program honored him with its Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1995.
Larry Starr '68
Medal of Merit
Mr. Starr was named assistant athletic director for sports medicine at Nova Southeastern University after 30 years as head athletic trainer for major league baseball's Cincinnati Reds and Florida Marlins. During his tenure, his teams won three World Series titles. A noted lecturer in sports medicine and athletic training, he has been honored with numerous awards by his peers, including induction into both the Ohio and Florida Athletic Trainers Halls of Fame. He began his career in 1968, as an assistant athletic trainer and instructor at Ohio University.
Two School of Recreation and Sport Sciences alumni, Gene A. Ford, Jr. (MSPE 1999: Athletic Administration) and Jennifer L. Thornton (BSSE 1999: Sport Management, MSA 2001: Sports Administration) were also inducted into the Kermit Blosser Ohio Athletics Hall of Fame.
