Following are scholarships offered to students in  the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences:

Richard Wells Antle Memorial Scholarship
An annual scholarship founded by the Reid Antle family in memory of their son, Richard Wells Antle, a former Ohio University student. Awarded to an outstanding student who is chosen on the basis of achievement, character, leadership, merit, academic ability, and with consideration of need. 

Charlotte LaTourrette Physical Education Scholarship
Established through the estate of Charlotte LaTourrette, professor emerita of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, who retired in 1971 after 41 years of service to Ohio University. Awarded to upper-class students pursuing a major in physical education, based on academic ability, character, citizenship and leadership qualities, with consideration of financial need.

Joseph P. Trepp Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was founded in memory of Joseph P. Trepp, who was a faculty member in the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation for 42 years. It is presented to a freshmen, sophomore or junior student majoring in physical education and is based upon scholastic achievement, demonstrated leadership potential, a commitment to a career in teaching, with consideration of financial need.

Dr. James A. Lavery Sports Administration/Facility  Management Scholarship
Established to honor James A. Lavery, former director of the School of Health and Sport Sciences. Recipient is a graduate student who is majoring in sports administration and who has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills.

Robert W. Sutton Athletic Training Scholarship
Established in recognition and memory of Robert W. Sutton, who earned a master’s degree with a concentration in athletic training from Ohio University in 1980, and to honor his dedication to helping others as an athletic trainer. Awarded to an undergraduate athletic training major who has demonstrated academic merit, a strong desire to enter the athletic training profession upon graduation, and exceptional ability to learn hands-on athletic training techniques. 

Naomi Richey Parsons Scholarship
Established in honor of Naomi Richey Parsons, a 1934 Ohio University graduate, who was respected and highly regarded by associates and friends. Naomi worked in the field of physical education and served on the board of the local YMCA. Selection of a female physical education, recreation studies, or sport science major is based on financial need and academic merit.

Mrs. J.E. Thackrey Memorial Scholarship
Presented in memory of Betty Thackrey, a community member who had a special interest in sports administration and facility management students, and who was “adopted” as a special friend by the classes of 1990 through 1996. Awarded to a sports administration graduate student, selected by their classmates, who has shown a commitment to community service to both Athens and Ohio University.

James G. Mason Sports Administration Scholarship
Dr. James G. Mason was founder of the Ohio University Sports Administration master’s degree program, the first such program to be offered in the United States. Awarded to full-time students in sports administration who have demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to a career in sports administration.

James G. Burkhouse Memorial Scholarship
Established by Dale Burkhouse, a graduate of Ohio University’s athletic training program in honor of his father, James G. Burkhouse. Awarded to a junior athletic training student who has demonstrated excellence in academic and clinical experience.

Carl T. Nessley Award
Honors the life and long-standing service of Carl T. Nessley to the field of physical education. Mr. Nessley served 32 years as a member of the university’s physical education faculty and 19 years as associate director of physical education and intercollegiate athletics. Presented to senior majors in the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences who are considered the most outstanding in terms of academic achievement; personal characteristics; and service to the university, and the community.

Brad Moorhead Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established by family and friends of Brad Moorhead in his memory. Moorhead, a senior sport industry major, passed away in 2004 while completing an internship. Presented to a senior sport management, formerly sport industry major who has demonstrated academic achievement.

Monty Woods Memorial Scholarship
Developed by the 1980-81 sports administration class in memory of 1981 graduate Ray Monty Woods to honor his dedication to the Ohio University sports administration program and his commitment to the field of sport information. Awarded to a full-time graduate student in sports administration who has demonstrated an interest in and a professional aspiration for a career in intercollegieate sports administration.
