Outdoor Recreation & Education Major

Contact Person: Program Coordinator, Dr. Bruce Martin

If the outdoors inspire you and you enjoy educating others, Outdoor Recreation & Education may be the place for you. However, this major is more involved than you may think. An inner drive and personal motivation are necessary for your success in this major.

Outdoor education involves more than just “climbing for credit”…

In this major you can expect to make an investment in your learning by committing time and resources. Traditional classroom learning is combined with field-based experiential learning to make a well-rounded education. Weekend trips are an important aspect of this program, since not all your learning will be done in the classroom. Courses in rock climbing, whitewater paddling, backpacking, caving, and wilderness survival will be both physically & intellectually demanding. These classes challenge you to balance technical skills with interpersonal development, and theoretical as well as historical concepts of outdoor recreation & education.
