About the Program

The major in physical education prepares the student to teach physical education from pre-kindergarten through grade twelve (PreK-12 teaching license). An applicant must meet the criteria for selective admission to and retention in teacher education as established by the College of Education (See Admission to Professional Education).

To graduate and receive the teaching license in this major, the student must complete all College of Education requirements in addition to program requirements. Upon completion of the program and after passing the Praxis II exam, they are eligible for a provisional teaching license in physical education.

The student will be granted a bachelor of science in physical education upon successful completion of all requirements.

Ohio requirements for teacher licensure state that students in the physical education program must complete a general studies program that includes the arts, communication, history, literature, mathematics, philosophy, sciences and the social sciences. In addition, the general studies curriculum should incorporate multicultural and global perspectives. The students should work closely with their faculty advisors to select courses that will fulfill both Ohio University’s General Education Requirements and the requirements for teacher licensure
